Rock Salt
Pink/Brown & White Rock Salt for Gritting
Grit salt includes our leading Rock Salt branded products, which are used for gritting pathways and driveways. Spread on outdoor surfaces when snow or ice is forecast during colder temperatures to prevent the surface from becoming slippery.
We stock both pink and white salts on our website, including small bags up to large bulk shipments to cover all usage requirements.
Our pink gritting salt is the same type used by UK councils. It offers excellent visibility when spread on roads or pavements.
Alternatively, our white gritting salt is designed for environments where cleanliness matters, including for pavements outside of hospitality venues or playgrounds. Made from marine salt, the product will still reduce slipping hazards, but is not as visible as pink salt.
Stone Warehouse is a leading UK supplier of Rock Salt products for gritting. Shop pink and white salt for gritting paths and driveways on our website and we’ll deliver your products to your door.

What Is Grit Salt And How Does It Work?
Grit salt covers our range of Rock Salt products, offering you either 100% rock or marine salt to use for the purposes of winter gritting.
How grit salt works is that it is spread in advance of snow falling to create a saline solution. In turn, this reduces the ability for snow to settle and it also helps prevent ice from forming on the surface.
By using grit salt as a precautionary measure, it helps ensure that any roads or pavements are not slippery when walked or driven on.
The pink grit salt we stock at Stone Warehouse is also the same product used by council gritters in the UK. This ensures a fantastic quality product if you also purchase the same grit salt for your home or commercial gritting needs.
Why Is Grit Salt Used On Icy Roads And Pavements?
Grit salt offers one of the easiest and cost-effective ways to reduce the slippiness of roads and pavements due to snow and ice which form during cold temperatures.
The reason why salt is preferred for gritting is because it reduces the temperature at which water freezes. This causes the ice to melt into slush. It also makes it more difficult for new layers of ice to form.
When used on roads in particular, the salt begins melting the thin layer of ice closest to the road surface. This weakens the ice’s grip and allows the traffic to break it up faster.
If a road or pavement surface isn’t gritted and snow or ice is able to form on top, it can be extremely dangerous to foot or road traffic users. Therefore, applicable surfaces should be pre-gritted ahead of any snow or ice being able to form.
How Effective Is Grit Salt For Preventing Slips And Falls In Winter?
Our Rock Salt gritting products are extremely effective for preventing slips and falls due to icy or snowy conditions.
That’s so long as they are used as recommended, including by spreading the product at the correct consistency for the weather conditions. Grit salt should also be spread when snow is forecast, but before it actually hits. Likewise, use grit salt if temperatures are predicted to fall below freezing.
What Are The Different Types Of Grit Salt Available?
At Stone Warehouse, we stock two different types of grit salt made by the brand Rock Salt.
Our pink salt offers the traditional looking grit and is also the same type used by local councils for gritting trucks. It offers better visibility when spreading on the ground, as well as being easier to see by those who will use the path or driveway.
Additionally, we stock a white salt which can also be used for gritting. Both products work to reduce slipping hazards due to snow and ice by improving grip underfoot. However, the white salt is preferred in areas where cleanliness is important, as the white grit salt is less detectable if carried into a building on the bottom of shoes.
Should I Use Grit Or Salt For Snow?
Rock salt and grit often get confused.
Our Rock Salt branded products use either 100% rock salt or marine salt. However, they are used for the purposes of gritting paths and driveways.
Salt (either marine or rock salt) is preferred for gritting because it lowers the freezing point of water, which melts ice and prevents refreezing. Therefore, all of our gritting products are actually made of salts.
What Is In Grit Salt?
At Stone Warehouse, we stock two Rock Salt products which can be used to grit your driveways and pathways. Both Rock Salt grit products are made from different ingredients to best fit your usage needs.
Our pink rock salt is sourced from the UK and is 100% pure rock salt. This means it is not mixed with other products such as sand. This product is also the same as UK councils use to grit roads meaning it also complies with BS3247.
In contrast, our white rock salt is 100% pure marine salt. Usually, it is sourced from North Africa or the Mediterranean. It is used to give you an option to be able to reduce slip and tripping hazards from snow and ice, but in a way which enables cleanliness. It is geared towards areas where the product may be walked into a building or play area.
How Much Grit Salt Should I Use On My Driveway Or Walkway?
The amount of grit you’ll need depends on the conditions. Usually, 10-15 grams per square metre is recommended to combat ice. But, if snow is due, you will need to up the coverage to 20-30 grams per square metre.
One way to tell if you have used too much grit salt previously is if you notice lots of grit remnants once the ground has thawed. Over gritting will waste the product so should be avoided.
Can Grit Salt Be Used Before It Snows?
Yes. Pre-gritting or ‘anti-icing’ is recommended whenever snow is forecast. It is also the method of choice of local councils in the UK, who will dispatch their gritters ahead of any snowfall or extremely cold temperatures.
For the best results, apply Rock Salt products on dry ground prior to snowfall, or when temperatures are forecast to drop below 0°C. By doing so, you will need less salt once the snow lands on the ground. Any snow which falls will also be easier to shovel or sweep away. Overall, the surface grip will be better for as long as the cold weather lasts compared to not pre-gritting.
Be aware that pre-gritting will be less effective if heavy rain comes before the snow. Or, if temperatures drop below -7°C.
What Surfaces Should Not Be Treated With Grit Salt?
Most outdoor road and path surfaces are suitable for gritting. However, new concrete (under a year old), outdoor tiles, wooden decking, natural stone surfaces, metal surfaces and indoor floors should not be gritted.
Additionally, consider whether white or pink grit would offer the best usage suitability for your outdoor space. For instance, while pink grit is highly visible, it is less suited to hospitality venues or domestic properties, since the grit can be brought in on shoes. In which case, our white grit salt would be a better fit whenever there is a risk of treading the grit inside.
