What Is Brown Rock Salt For Gritting?

Rock Salt in Brown is also known as brown grit as it’s used for gritting purposes. However, it’s actually made from 100% rock salt, which makes it very effective at improving the grip on outdoor surfaces during cold weather events such as snow and ice. 

Our customers are also familiar with this product as ‘pink’ Rock Salt, as the appearance is a mixture of brown and pink tones owing to it being a natural material. Made by the company Rock Salt, this colour option is sourced from the UK which also makes it cheaper than the White Rock Salt alternative.

Is Brown Rock Salt Better Than White Salt For Gritting?

Either the Brown or White versions of Rock Salt can be used for gritting. In terms of which colour is best for your needs, there are a couple of points to consider. 

The first is visibility, with Brown Rock Salt being easier to see on the ground than White Rock Salt. The higher visibility can aid with distribution as well as safety, since it’s easier to see which surfaces have been gritted. 

However, for gritting around homes or hospitality venues where cleanliness is important, White Rock Salt is often preferred. This is because the White version doesn’t leave a visible residue behind.

Brown Rock Salt Vs White: Which One Is Best For My Usage Needs?

Both Rock Salt products available in either White or Brown can be used to grit outside your home or commercial property. 

The White version is ideal wherever cleanliness is important. For instance, where the residue of traditional brown grit is likely to be walked into your building, staining any flooring in the process. 

However, for general gritting of roads, pavements or footpaths where cleanliness is not a concern, the Brown version of Rock Salt is ideal. It’s also cheaper to purchase. 

 

When To Spread Brown De Icing Rock Salt?

There is a reason that council gritting teams keep a close eye on the weather forecast, since the best time to grit is just before any bad weather hits. This method is known as preventive gritting and involves spreading the grit before any frost, ice or snow is forecast. It’s effective because if the salt is already on the ground, it can immediately form brine which stops ice from bonding to the surface.

Aim to have the grit spread by late afternoon so that you can avoid the sharp temperature drops of the evening. 

Reapplication can also be required to maintain adequate coverage. Inspect previous applications to determine if more grit is needed to replenish the existing layer. This will help ensure safety for foot or road traffic. 

 

What Are The Benefits Of Using Brown Rock Salt For Large-Scale Gritting?

Visibility is one of the top benefits of using Brown Rock Salt (also known as ‘pink’ Rock Salt). That’s because unlike the White version of the product, Brown Rock Salt is highly visible both to the person who needs to grit the surface, as well as all those who may benefit from seeing that the surface has been gritted. 

Also, Brown Rock Salt is also cheaper to purchase, which makes it very cost-effective if you have a large outdoor surface area that requires gritting.

Does Brown Rock Salt Prevent Ice From Forming Again?

Yes, Brown Rock Salt melts existing ice and snow. It also helps prevent refreezing by lowering the freezing point of water. When Brown Rock Salt dissolves, it creates a salty brine that spreads across the surface and will continue working for several hours.

However, its effectiveness also depends on the weather. In particular, heavy rainfall, heavy snowfall, heavy traffic or temperatures which are below -10°C can be problematic. In which case, reapplication will be required once the ground is no longer wet and has been cleared of any debris. 

 

How Long Does Brown Grit Salt Last After Spreading?

Typically, Brown Grit Salt will remain on the ground for 6-24 hours after spreading. 

However, heavy rainfall can wash salt away almost immediately. For this reason, you should not grit outdoor surfaces that are still wet from the rain. 

To reduce any safety hazards, you will need to keep a close eye on your grit to ensure sufficient coverage remains, especially if further snow or ice is forecast. 

Also, the amount of time your grit will remain for will depend on the amount of Rock Salt that has been applied and also how much foot or vehicle traffic the area has been subjected to. 

Ensure you have purchased enough Salt Rock to reapply, especially if you have any surfaces which are prone to becoming slippery during cold weather events. 

 

Can Brown Rock Salt Be Used With A Salt Spreader Or Grit Bin?

However, if you are just buying a small quantity of Rock Salt to use at home, you can also manually distribute the product across your drive or pathways. Just ensure the coverage is suitable based on the severity of the snow or ice that is forecast. 

 

Is Brown Rock Salt Safe To Use On Block Paving, Concrete or Tarmac?

Yes, Brown Rock Salt can be used to grit outdoor surfaces such as block paving, concrete and tarmac. That’s so long as the material isn’t freshly laid (i.e. less than 12 months old), in which case, sand should be used instead. 

 

Can Brown Rock Salt Be Used Around Homes, Schools And Commercial Premises?

Yes, Brown Rock Salt can be used around residential and commercial properties, including to grit car parks, foot paths, pavements and loading bay areas. The reason why brown grit (i.e. Rock Salt) is preferred because it is highly effective at melting ice and preventing slippery surfaces during winter. It provides strong traction, works quickly and is cost-effective.

However, one consideration with Brown Rock Salt is that it can produce light staining, which may not be ideal for some commercial sites or schools. In particular, where there is a risk of the product being walked into the building in environments where cleanliness is important. In which case, we recommend purchasing our White Rock Salt product instead which performs a similar job but will not leave a visible residue. 

 

How Do I Store Brown Rock Salt To Keep It Dry And Ready For Use?

We recommend storing your Brown Rock Salt in a purpose-built grit bin. Ideally, the grit bin should be UV-stable and lockable. The bin should also be placed on a raised level surface to avoid any moisture seeping in. 

Alternatively, you can also store your grit bags in a dry, covered location which doesn’t experience extreme temperature fluctuations. 

If you do store your Rock Salt away in time for winter, ensure you break up any clumps before using it. This will help prevent product wastage.
