Rock White Salt - What Is It Used For?

White Rock Salt is a product by the brand Rock Salt. It is made from 100% marine salt and is used to help prevent ice and snow from settling on road or pavement surfaces. By using White Rock Salt before snow or ice forms, it can improve safety for foot and road traffic by increasing the grip of outdoor surfaces. 

While Pink Rock Salt also performs a similar function, White Rock Salt is used when there is also a need to maintain cleanliness of the surrounding areas. Since Pink Rock Salt can stain if it is brought indoors on shoes, White Salt is more ideal for venues like hotels, restaurants, schools and similar areas which need to be kept clean. 

How Is White Rock Salt Made?

White Rock Salt branded products are sourced from places such as North Africa and the Mediterranean. 

The salt is mined from the chosen location, before it undergoes washing and purification processes. Sometimes, white salt is crystallised which enhances the purification process to create exceptionally clean, white crystals. 

The purified salt is then dried and screened into different grain sizes. It’s then bagged and shipped to the UK, where it is ready to be used as a gritting product for your driveway or pathway. 

What’s The Difference Between White And Brown Rock Salt?

On our website, you’ll notice we stock Rock Salt in both white and brown (which we list as pink salt) colour options. 

Both white and brown options are used for the purposes of gritting, particularly on surfaces that are prone to becoming slippery in snowy or icy conditions. However, both products are made from different materials and are intended for varying usages. 

White Rock Salt is sourced from places such as North Africa or the Mediterranean. It is made from 100% marine salt. The white colouring is ideal when you don’t want the grit to be noticeable if it is carried into your home or building underfoot, which can be a problem with darker coloured grit. However, white Rock Salt is more expensive as a result. 

Pink (AKA brown) Rock Salt offers excellent visibility, both when distributing the grit on the ground and also to be able to safely walk across the gritted surface. Pink grit salt is sourced from the UK and is made from 100% rock salt. It is the preferred choice for cost-effectiveness and also when there is a need to visibly see the areas which have been gritted.

How Much White Rock Salt Do I Need For My Driveway?

The amount of grit you’ll need (i.e. White Rock Salt) will depend on the severity of the weather conditions. 

If light frost is predicted, then 20g of White Rock Salt per m² is recommended. Up this amount to 30-40g per m² if ice or snow is forecast. 

When heavier snow or ice is forecast, as much as 50g of White Rock Salt will be needed per m².

Any Next Day deliveries need to be placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday.

Next Day deliveries placed on a Friday before 1pm will be delivered the following Monday

(Excluding Bank Holidays - then the delivery will be on the Tuesday)
