Gabion Walls: The Complete Guide to Building With Stone

Gabion walls have become one of the most popular features in modern gardens, and it's easy to see why. They're sturdy, striking and surprisingly versatile. Whether you need to hold back a sloping garden, shield an exposed patio from the wind, or simply add a bold design feature to your outdoor space, a gabion wall ticks every box.

Here at Stone Warehouse, we supply gabion stone to customers right across the UK. Our angular, natural rocks are made for filling steel gabion baskets, locking together to create structures built to last for decades. In this guide, we'll walk you through what gabion walls are, why they work so well and how to build one yourself.

What is a gabion wall?

A gabion wall is made by filling steel mesh cages, known as gabions, with stone. These cube-shaped cages can be placed on their own or stacked together to form a heavy, solid mass. Once filled and packed tightly, the stones interlock to create a structure capable of resisting natural forces such as gravity, wind, water and soil pressure.

The word "gabion" comes from the Italian gabbione, meaning "big cage". The principle is simple, but the results are seriously impressive. A well-built gabion can stand the test of time without the maintenance that fences and rendered walls demand.

Why choose a gabion wall?

There are plenty of reasons gabion walls have won over so many of our customers.

Strength and stability
The combination of natural rock and galvanised steel creates a robust structure that holds back soil and resists water pressure with ease.

Brilliant drainage
Water passes straight through the gaps between the stones, which reduces the risk of pooling and erosion behind the wall.

Long lasting
When correctly assembled, gabion baskets can last 70 years or more. That's far longer than a traditional fence.

Low maintenance
Once your wall is in place, there's very little to do. No painting, no rendering, no annual upkeep.

Eye-catching design
With our range of colours and stone types, you can create anything from a rustic country look to a sleek, contemporary feature.

Eco-friendly
Gabions can be dismantled and the stone reused elsewhere, making them a sustainable choice for your garden.

What can you use gabion walls for?

Gabion walls are far more than functional barriers. Our customers use them in all sorts of creative ways:
Retaining walls: Perfect for holding back sloping ground and preventing soil slippage or erosion.
Garden seating: Stack the baskets, add a cushion on top, and you've got a sturdy outdoor seat.
Borders and edging: Filled cubes make an attractive way to section off areas of your garden.
Water features: Gabion stone supports ponds, fountains and waterfalls beautifully, and the texture even dampens sound. As a bonus, the stones deepen in colour when wet.
Weather shielding: Stacked gabions block out wind and rain, ideal for exposed corners of your garden.

What stone is best for gabion walls?

Large, angular stones are the best choice for gabion walls. Their irregular shape allows them to lock together tightly, which is exactly what gives a gabion its stability and longevity. Popular materials include granite, limestone, basalt, quartzite and natural slate.

A key rule to remember: choose stones that are at least 25% larger than the mesh openings on your cage. For example, if the mesh size is 75x75mm, opt for stones around 100mm so they can't slip through the gaps. The good news is that most of our gabion stone is comfortably larger than this, ensuring a secure fit.

At Stone Warehouse, our gabion stone comes in a wide range of natural colours, from greys and browns to creams and greens. If you're after that classic Cotswold look, we can cater to that too with our Cotswold Rockery.

How to build a gabion retaining wall

If you fancy taking on the project yourself, here's a straightforward overview of how to build a gabion retaining wall. For larger or taller structures, it's always worth consulting someone experienced first.

First, gather your materials. You'll need gabion stones, gabion baskets, crushed stone for the base, geotextile fabric, and wire ties.

Next, plan your layout. Map out where the wall will run and make sure you've ordered enough stone to fill the full width and height of your baskets.

Then, you'll need to dig the trench. Excavate slightly wider than the baskets, allowing around 150–200mm extra on each side. Aim for a depth of 150–200mm for smaller walls, and dig deeper for taller walls or softer soil.

Once the trench is ready, lay the base. Add a gravel base of 100–150mm, tamp it down, and check that it's level.

After the base is set, add geotextile fabric. Lay permeable fabric along the back of the trench and up the slope behind where the wall will sit.

Now it's time to assemble the baskets. Unfold each gabion basket and connect them with wire ties until they're strong and stable.

With the baskets assembled, you can fill them with stone. Start at the corners and visible faces, working horizontally in layers. Gently tamp the stones to minimise gaps.

Finally, finish up. Trim any loose wire ties and backfill behind the wall with soil or gravel for extra support if needed.

How long do gabion walls last?

The pairing of durable natural rock and galvanised steel mesh is remarkably tough. Provided your baskets are assembled correctly, a gabion wall can last 70 years or more. That longevity is exactly why gabions are such a smart investment for retaining walls and weather shielding, easily outlasting a standard timber fence.

Ready to build your own gabion wall?

A gabion wall is a brilliant way to combine practicality and style in your garden. From erosion control to garden seating, the possibilities are wide open, and with the right stone, your wall will stand strong for decades.
