Perfect Pond in the Peak District
A few weeks ago we visited a pond project completed recently by Matthew Nice of Nice Ponds in a beautiful village in the heart of the Peak District.
Garden Ponds come in many shapes and sizes and as such the Gravel, Pebbles, Cobbles and Rockery requirements vary to meet their need. One of Stone Warehouses strengths is the ability to cater for all sizes, from the small water feature all the way through to a lavish major construction like the ones completed by Matt and his team In Derbyshire.
And boy, it is a beauty…..the design and finished result are something to behold.
It turns, what could be a neglected corner of a large garden, into a tranquil place to sit, relax and be one with the wildlife, that the pond alone, has brought to the garden.
Not only that, you also cannot help to be impressed by the technical aspects of this build. In an area of the garden where higher neighbouring fields all pointing to the ponds lower ground location, hidden reservoirs to capture, purify and control water run-off are the key to the clean nature filled habitat that now surround it.
The principal structural rockery stone that shapes the pond comes from a local Derbyshire quarry similar in shade and appearance to the Stone Warehouse Yorkstone Rockery that’s available in both half and full crates.
These angular yet subtly rounded bespoke rockery pieces, at the top of the feature, sit beautifully with the shades of the smaller pebbles on the shore of the pond and where the water is pumped through them to cascades down the stream.
With the knowledge that Stone Warehouse delivered both Tweed Pebbles and Scottish Pebbles to site, I asked Matt why the need for two very similar pebble types.
He explained that Tweed Pebbles, with slightly more angular pieces within the material, for him, worked better against the angular rockery. While Scottish Pebbles, with a more rounded effect, were perfect on the pond liner, didn’t run the risk of puncturing and with subtly different sizes were amazing for water purification.
How many ponds do you see going green with algae?
Well not this one, the same materials have been used together to specifically design an intake bay. This allows his client to skim the surface of leaves and debris at the foot of the pond and is just another part of the cleaver design that maintains the perfect look all year round.
Coupled with the lush aquatic planting that have all matured so quickly, I don’t think there’s anything that Matt and the team haven’t thought about here.
It's one of those projects that Stone Warehouse were delighted to supply and were even more grateful to be able to come and see everything working in complete harmony.
