Sandbags For Flooding UK FAQs
Have any questions about our sand bags for sale?
Popular search queries which lead customers to our website include ‘sand sacks for sale’, ‘sandbag buy online’ and ‘sand bags bulk’.
We’ve answered some of the top queries below. For any other queries, including buying large quantities of sandbags for flood protection, please get in touch.
What Are Sandbags Used For And How Do They Work?
Sandbags are portable bags that are filled with sand. They are primarily used to help prevent flooding due to their ability to form a tight barrier against water when stacked.
When placed around a home or commercial building, sandbags can be used strategically to slow or block floodwater. In doing so, sandbags can help protect vulnerable entry points from flood water and also redirect any floodwater away from buildings.
Sandbags are most effective when stacked both tightly together as well as higher than any floodwater. Additional measures such as tarp, flood barriers or flood gates can also be used to best protect your property from the risk of flooding.
Flood Cubes Vs Sand Bags: What’s The Difference?
At Stone Warehouse, we stock both sand bags and flood cubes as part of our flood defence range.
Flood cubes require water to activate. When wet, they expand to provide flood protection by absorbing water. They are larger and heavier than sandbags, although they are also stackable. Since they don’t fully expand until activated, flood cubes require less storage space than sandbags which arrive pre-filled.
Sand bags provide flood protection by providing mass with each bag. When stacked, they can be used to build a wall around doorways or even the entire perimeter of your property. However, sand bags are prone to seepage unless tightly packed together, meaning the quality of their installation is key to their effectiveness. Overall, sandbags are cheaper than flood cubes.
How Long Do Sandbags Last?
Stone Warehouse sandbags are made from heavy duty polypropylene, meaning they can last for between 2 to 5 years so long as they are stored in a dry, cool and dark place. If stored in direct sunlight, this can reduce the lifespan of the sandbag.
Sandbag UK top tip: Order ahead of flood season to ensure you’ll always have enough sandbags on hand when needed.
Are Sandbags Reusable Or Disposable?
Sandbags are reusable so long as they have not come into contact with floodwater. Once a sandbag has been contaminated with floodwater it must be disposed of for health and safety purposes. Check with your local council as to how to dispose of any used sandbags as the rules can differ from one local authority to another.
What Materials Are Sandbags Made From?
At Stone Warehouse, our sandbags are made from heavy duty polypropylene. Each bag is filled with approximately 15kg of sand.
How Effective Are Sandbags For Flood Protection?
Sandbags offer effective flood protection when used correctly. However, they are not a complete solution meaning other measures including tarp or flood barriers may also be required.
What sandbags are particularly useful for is slowing down floodwater and also redirecting the water flow, especially to help protect key entry points. They work best when placed down ahead of the floodwater reaching your property.
The sandbags should be tightly placed together to eliminate gapping. To do so, stack the sandbags in a formation similar to how bricks are laid, so that each sandbag is staggered rather than sitting in the same position as the bag on top or underneath. Tamp each bag down as you build the wall so that no gaps remain.
If your property is prone to flooding, consider investing in other long term measures (i.e flood gates) to protect your home or business as much as possible. Ordering sandbags ahead of time can also be used to provide additional protection when required.
How To Stop Water Entering My Home During A Flood
A combination of flood-prevention measures may be needed to protect flood water from entering your property. While no method is 100% guaranteed, taking action is certainly better than no protection at all.
At Stone Warehouse, we supply a range of flood defence measures including sandbags, sand cubes and flood barriers to help protect the perimeter of your property.
For sandbags, we recommend building a wall around your doorways or entire property, ensuring that the bags are tightly packed together. The height of the wall will depend on the level of floodwater expected.
A sandbag wall that is built to between 1ft-3ft is average, although the height may need to be increased to divert heavier floodwater away from your property.
Please note that sandbags are considered a temporary flood protection measure. They can also be used in conjunction with permanent measures such as flood barriers.
How Many Sandbags Do I Need To Protect My Home From Flooding?
The amount of sandbags you need will depend on the amount of protection you want to build, both in terms of the width and height of the sandbag wall.
As a general rule, we’d recommend 10 sandbags to protect a front door. Larger garage doors can require 20 sandbags. A full perimeter wall can require around 80 sandbags.
At Stone Warehouse, we sell sandbags in shipments ranging from 10 bags to 63 bags. You can also double up on your order to purchase as many sandbags as you need.
Overall, it’s a good idea to plan to have more sandbags than you think you may need, so that you’re ready for every eventuality, especially in rapidly changing flood conditions. Also, if you tightly pack the sandbags to reduce gaps, you may require some additional sandbags to compensate for the height loss of the wall.
What Is The Best Way To Stack Sandbags For Flood Prevention?
Sandbags need to be stacked tightly together so they resemble a brick or pyramid formation.
An optional first step is to place tarp on the ground first. The tarp can also be secured against outside walls or doors to provide additional protection for vulnerable spots such as doors, drains and low windows.
Start laying your sandbags by creating the first layer of the wall which will form the shape of your sandbags. The laying pattern can be in a straight line, but can also be curved around doors to enable you to still be able to enter and exit your home.
When you place each sandbag on top of the next to build the wall, apply some pressure with your foot to tamp each bag down to improve the seal. Continue with the brick formation (also known as a running bond formation) as you build up, rather than stacking each bag directly on top of the next. This will help prevent any gaps from forming.
Keep building the wall of sandbags so that it is at least 1ft-3ft high. Ultimately, the higher and tighter the sandbags are, the better protection they will provide.
Ensure you double check for any gaps between the bags. Also, don’t stack the bags too high without structural support so that the bags are less likely to topple over due to the force of the water.
Is It Better To Put Sandbags Inside Or Outside Of My Home?
Sandbags are primarily designed to be placed outside so that they can divert floor water away from key entry points such as doors, garage doors and airbricks.
Arrange the sandbags in deep layers to form a wall so that they create a tight seal around your property.
Interior placement of sandbags is still possible, but should only be considered as a very last resort to offer containment for any floodwater seepage that has already occurred.
Should I Put Tarp Under Sandbags?
Placing tarp under your row of sandbags can provide additional flood protection.
While you will need to ensure you still have a safe exit from your property, you may also wish to affix the tarp to the outside of the doorframe to create a tighter seal against the water.
Where this method is most effective is around doorways, since these areas are most vulnerable to floodwater passing through the sandbags. That said, it’s also important to tightly pack your sandbags together, to reduce the ability for water to pass through the gaps as much as possible.
Do Sandbags Really Stop Water From Entering A House?
Sandbags are designed to reduce or slow the rate at which floodwater enters a house.
However, sandbags do not create a completely waterproof barrier, especially where the floodwater level is higher than the sandbags, or where water is able to pass through any gaps between the bags.
What sandbags are particularly effective at is diverting or channelling the floodwater elsewhere, including away from vulnerable spots like front doors.
Overall, the method of laying the sandbags will determine the level of protection provided. Combining sand bags with a tarp backing (to protect doorways) and using our additional flood barrier products such as the Osmo Flood Barrier is also recommended.
Can Sandbags Be Used For Retaining Walls Or Slope Stabilisation?
Yes, sandbags can be used to prevent material slippage for retaining walls or slopes. However, sandbags are considered a temporary solution for ground stabilisation.
Instead, we recommend checking out our garden landscaping products which can offer more of a long term solution. They can also enhance the visual appeal of your outdoor space.
One of our top picks includes our gabion boulders (to be used in gabion baskets), which are ideal for holding back large amounts of soil.
However, for more modest material containment around your garden borders or lawns, check out our edging products.
