Gardening Metal Edging FAQs
Have you reached this page because you’ve been Googling the likes of ‘Core edging garden metal’ or ‘garden edging metal’?
Let’s get those top questions answered. But for anything else, please reach out to the Stone Warehouse team.
Why Use Metal For Garden Edging Instead Of Wood Or Plastic?
Our Core metal garden edging is made of stainless steel, which offers superior durability. Core edging products are also powder-coated which gives them enhanced weather protection.
While wooden edging is a popular choice for edging, it has many pitfalls. Namely, the ability to rot, crack or split, especially when submerged under the ground.
Also, plastic edging isn’t as strong as stainless steel edging. It also doesn’t offer the aesthetic appeal of metal edging.
How do I stop grass from spreading into my flower beds?
Install metal grass edging along the perimeter of your lawn, which will help contain it. Crucially, garden edging provides separation to stop the likes of grass, flowers and weeds from growing in unwanted areas.
What’s the best way to keep a crisp edge between my lawn and garden?
We recommend using metal yard edging, including products from the Core Edge range, to create crisp lines. What the edging will do is establish separation between different sections of your garden. This containment will also provide a neat appearance, particularly when installed between your lawn and borders.
How do I keep gravel or wood chips from spilling off my garden path?
Metal edges for gardens are just the ticket if you’re dealing with wood chips or gravel spilling out everywhere.
Use Core’s metal edging to line the edges of your garden path. This will not only neatly define your path, but also aid in containing any loose materials such as gravel or chippings.
How do I stop people from walking through my flower beds?
Core’s metal edging can be installed so that it protrudes above ground level. In doing so, it can provide a visible and physical border which you can use to discourage people from walking on certain areas, like flower beds.
What’s the most durable edging for lawns and gardens?
Metal is the best option when in search of a durable edging product for lawns and other areas of your garden. Core Edging stainless steel edging offers enhanced weather protection due to its powder coating, and also benefits from a unique interlocking design.
Additionally, metal is resistant to warping, rotting and cracking. Metal is also excellent at holding its shape, while still being able to give you curved borders if desired. It also offers a slim profile, ensuring a sleek result for your lawn and garden edges.
How can I create clean, modern borders in my landscape design?
Metal garden edging will give your borders a neat and structured appearance.
If you place the edging deep into the ground, the border will be invisible yet effective.
However, for modern border design, Core Edging metal edging can also be installed shallow into the ground, so that the edging offers a visual separation between your borders above the ground.

How To Use Metal Garden Edging
Gardens represent a transient environment, as they are subject to frequent change throughout the seasons.
All the while, organic material looks to grow, including in places which aren’t ideal. The likes of soil, gravel and chippings can also experience movement, resulting in materials being displaced elsewhere in the garden.
What edging does is create structure and boundaries where needed. Commonly, this is along the edges of lawns, borders or pathways.
There are two main ways that metal garden edging can be installed, including above or below ground. The choice depends on whether the containment needs to be invisible (below ground) or visible (above ground) to create a design statement.
With Core Edging products, the dual-locking mechanism creates a strong boundary which supports both above and below ground installation.
Sunken Garden Edging
Sunken edging provides invisible control of your garden. When edging is installed below the ground level, it establishes a solid border between material changes (i.e. a lawn and soil).
If you’re a keen gardener, you’ll be familiar with this traditional method of using garden edging products by placing them deeply into the ground.
Embedding your metal edges deeply around your lawns, borders or gravel driveway means the edging itself is not visible above the ground. However, the neatness that the edging creates is very much apparent. This is especially the case when it comes to material containment, as the likes of soil, mulch or lawn edges remain crisply defined.
Underneath the soil, metal edging can also create a barrier system for roots and grass. It provides resistance against unruly grass growth, as well as helping to prevent weeds and invasive species from being able to spill over into different sections of the garden.
Raised Garden Edging
Raised edging is used for material containment as well as for visual effect.
Core’s metal garden edging offers a number of colourways to choose from, meaning raised garden edging can equally be used to make a style statement.
A simple idea is to line your borders with metal edging to provide a flash of colour. Or, you can fill the space in between the edge strips with another material, such as gravel, for a creative landscaping effect. The raised edges establish a bold visible line, creating a clear separation between garden beds, lawns or pathways.
Additionally, raised garden edging provides structural support to help prevent material washout in areas that receive a lot of rainfall.

Core Edging’s metal edging can play a functional or decorative role in your garden.
So whether you want to make certain gardening tasks easier or make a style statement, Core Edging products offer endless flexibility and versatility.

Lawn Edging
It can be a challenge to keep grass lawns looking pristine. While you might be able to mow the length, it’s also important to contain the edges of the lawn.
Metal garden border edging is perfect for the job, as it can be used to neatly define the perimeter of your lawn. In doing so, grass creep can be prevented, which happens when turf roots spread into flower beds or vegetable plots.
Additionally, Core Edge lawn edging can work to keep the soil which nourishes your grass in place. This helps to prevent erosion, including when soil washes into the lawn following heavy rain.
In front gardens, metal lawn edging boosts kerb appeal. For grass in your rear garden, neater lawn edges can also make mowing and other garden maintenance tasks easier to complete.
Garden Beds Edging
If you have any garden beds, you’ll know just how much work goes into keeping them in bloom, not to mention free of weeds.
By using metal edging, you can ensure that the edges of your garden beds remain neatly
defined. Rather than sinking the metal edging into the ground, opting for a raised edge can also add visual interest to the edges of your borders.
Raised edging can support soil and will also provide some defence against invasive root systems.
Garden Paths
When loose materials such as gravel, chippings and bark are used to create garden paths, they can easily migrate elsewhere. This results in the border of the path becoming undefined.
Garden metal edging can be used along the edges of your path to offer physical containment.
Beyond the visual appeal, well-defined garden paths promote better safety for foot traffic, pushchairs and wheelchairs.
When a garden path is lined with borders, edging can also prevent nearby vegetation from being trampled on.
Gravel Driveway Containment
As one of our most popular hardscaping materials, gravel remains an excellent material for driveways and walkways.
However, as a loose material, gravel often benefits from physical constraints such as a
metal gardening edge to keep it looking neat and tidy.
When metal edging is used, it can prevent gravel pieces from migrating into the lawn or street.
In turn, this can extend the lifespan of your gravel driveway, particularly when it comes to avoiding frequent gravel replacement due to product migration.
Keeping your gravel neatly contained also helps reduce the need for excessive garden maintenance, particularly if your gravel ends up beyond the boundaries of your garden.
