FAQs
What are aggregates used for?
Aggregates are versatile materials used for driveways, pathways, garden borders, drainage solutions and decorative landscaping. They provide excellent coverage, improve drainage and create a clean low maintenance finish.
Which aggregate size is best for driveways?
For driveways we recommend gravel or chippings between 10-20mm. These sizes compact well under pressure and provide a stable surface that is still easy to walk on. Larger aggregates (20mm+) may not be as comfortable for foot traffic but offer increased durability.
What is the best aggregate for drainage?
For drainage we recommend 20mm+ chippings or gravel, such as Plum Slate Chippings or Polar Ice® Gravel. Their larger size allows water to flow through easily, preventing pooling and ground stability.
Can aggregates be used for pathways?
Yes! Aggregates such as Cotswold Chippings, Golden Gravel and Heritage Quartz Gravel are ideal for pathways. Their angular shape helps them lock together providing a stable and durable surface.
Do I need a membrane under aggregates?
Using a weed membrane under aggregates helps suppress weeds, prevent sinking and maintain a clean appearance. This is especially important for driveways and paths where regular foot or vehicle traffic may cause stones to shift.
What’s the difference between gravel and chippings?
Gravel typically refers to naturally rounded stones, whereas chippings are angular and machine crushed. Angular chippings interlock better making them more stable for driveways and paths, while rounded gravel offers a softer more decorative finish.
How do I maintain my aggregate surface?
How to maintain your aggregates:
- Rake the surface to redistribute stones and keep the spread even.
- Remove debris and weeds to keep the area clean.
- Top up stones periodically to replace any that may have shifted over time.
- Edge the area to keep the aggregate contained.
