Paving is easy to clean and maintain, and can potentially remain in place for decades if you take care of it. So unlike gravel which needs regular topping up or decking which needs constant staining and treating, paving slabs offer a hassle-free alternative.
Paving Can Be More Attractive To Property Buyers Over Decking
Decking definitely has its merits. But the simple fact is that decking does require a lot of maintenance over time to retain its condition and appearance. Overall, wood is not as durable as concrete or natural stone paving.
Research has shown that paving can be more appealing to those looking to purchase a property due to the reduced maintenance needed. In addition, paving is often more renter-friendly too, especially if as a landlord you are in search of a durable and long-lasting external flooring solution.

How To Clean Paving Slabs
Paving slabs can be cleaned using various methods, depending on whether you just want to give your patio a general clean or if it needs more intensive stain removal. On the lighter end of the scale, you can brush away dirt and use a mixture of detergent and water to clean the paving. Alternatively, light jet washing or specialist paving cleaners can be used to lift stains, algae or other types of dirt from your paving slabs. Consult the manufacturer's instructions and check the paving slab material type to ensure your chosen cleaning products will be compatible. Avoid cleaning paving slabs with bleach or other astringent substances.
Can You Paint Paving Slabs?
The look of tired looking patios can be revived by adding a coat of paint, so long as you choose paint that is specifically designed for outdoor patio use. However, be aware that compared with painting a wall, painting any floor surface can be impractical if the paint does not adhere correctly or if someone walks through the paint by accident! If your patio has had its day and cannot be cleaned or repaired, replacing your patio is probably warranted.
How To Clean Paving Slabs Without A Pressure Washer
Paving slabs can benefit from regular brushing to remove leaves, dirt and general debris from the surface. A mixture of washing up liquid and water can be used for cleaning. For more stubborn stains or algae, opt for a cleaning solution that is specifically for your paving type, i.e. concrete slabs or natural stone slabs.
Can You Glue Loose Paving Slabs?
Glue is best left to your craft projects rather than trying to fix paving slabs which have come loose! If a paving stone has come loose or is rocking, then the only solution is to lift up the stone and remove the existing bed. You will then need to apply a fresh mortar mix, prime the underside of the slab and then relay the slab. Unfortunately, shortcuts such as trying to glue the stone down will not fix the issue and could create a hazard in your garden.
Can You Lay Paving Slabs On Sand?
Technically you can lay paving slabs on sand, but if you are looking to achieve a quality installation, then using sand as part of a concrete mix is the preferred option. The problem with laying paving slabs only on sand is that this can result in movement of the slabs. Since nobody likes a patio that starts sliding all over the place, it’s always better to play it safe with the correct ground preparation techniques!
