Porcelain Paving Usage Ideas
Porcelain paving slabs are extremely versatile. These slabs can be used to pave practically any part of your outdoor space, whether the intention is to walk on the paving or create a space for entertaining in the summer months.
On each product listing, you’ll find full product details including the usage suitability of our garden paving to guide you. But here is a general overview to inspire your next project!
Patios And Walkways
Having a solid, even surface to walk on in your garden cannot be underestimated. For pushchairs and wheelchairs especially, an uneven surface can create barriers to accessing the property or the outdoor space.
But with porcelain paving, the thorough ground preparation ensures a plumb finish as each tile will be checked with a spirit level to ensure it is even with the tile next to it. All of which will provide you with a highly practical surface, not least because of the smooth texture of the slabs themselves!
Did you know?: Research suggests adding a new patio can add up to 20% to the value of your home. Furthermore, patios have been found to be 65% more attractive to buyers compared with decking.
Outdoor Dining Or Seating Areas
When that British sun finally hits, we all want to be out making the most of it. With a beautiful new porcelain patio, you can easily establish outdoor dining or seating areas. Porcelain is also idea for an eating area because it’s maintenance for spills is very easy. As Porcelain is very dense, most things like oil, wine and grease are easy to wipe off and leave the paving stain-free. Porosity of concrete or sandstones (unless they're treated with a sealant), will result in stains being more difficult to remove.
Courtyards
Only have a small amount of outdoor space, or perhaps an area which connects to another part of your garden? Porcelain slabs can be used to establish or enhance an existing courtyard providing an abundance of practicality and durability. If you have room, adding a few potted plants can create an extremely appealing look to your courtyard.
Pools Or Water Features
Pools and water features are often bordered by paving, either to enhance accessibility or purely for aesthetic appeal. With textured surfaces that offer excellent non-slip properties, our porcelain slabs are an ideal choice for a variety of outdoor projects, including areas near water features.

How To Clean Porcelain Paving Slabs
It’s a common myth that cleaning porcelain slabs is difficult, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! On a regular basis, give your paving slabs a good sweep to remove dirt and debris which will help maintain their appearance. For deeper cleans, you can mix a bucket of warm water and washing up liquid to make a cleaning mix. You can also add some specialist porcelain paving cleaner into this mix for a slightly more intensive clean. A light power wash can also be used to lift any stubborn algae or stains from porcelain slabs but please avoid the paving joints! Also, avoid using bleach or other astringent products on porcelain paving as this may lift the colour.
How To Cut Porcelain Paving Slabs
It is generally recommended to use a bench saw with a diamond blade to cut porcelain slabs to ensure a clean cut with smooth edges. If you are not confident in cutting your own porcelain paving slabs, we recommend enlisting the help of a professional landscaper.
What Is Porcelain Paving?
Porcelain paving is a type of ceramic material used for exterior landscaping projects. It is made by firing finely ground clay at extremely high temperatures, resulting in an extremely durable material.
Are Porcelain Paving Slabs Any Good?
Yes! Porcelain slabs make for a stunning addition to any outdoor space. They provide a practical and even surface to walk on, as well as dine or entertain on. With 5 colours to choose from, you can create the exact look you have in mind for your garden with our beautiful porcelain slabs. Over time, porcelain slabs are easy to maintain, meaning they will offer longevity to your project.
Are Porcelain Paving Slabs Hard Wearing?
Yes. Any porcelain paving that is geared towards outdoor use must be able to tolerate heavy foot traffic along with various weather conditions. Porcelain paving undergoes vitrification to prolong the lifespan of each slab. Cleaning and maintaining your porcelain paving slabs over time will ensure they continue to look and perform their best for longer.

How Do You Make A Good Outdoor Space?
Everyone has a different idea of how they’d like to use their garden, whether this is more of a playground for the kids or a relaxing space to unwind in. In any case, we think a good outdoor space is somewhere that feels inviting to spend time in. There’s no better way to introduce practicality and style into your garden than by adding outdoor porcelain tiles!
Is Porcelain Paving Slippery When Wet?
Our porcelain patio slabs have anti-slip properties and are designed for exterior use. While it’s possible to find other types of porcelain paving for interior walls and floors, when used within exterior landscaping projects, the paving slabs must be specifically geared towards outdoor use. This means the texture of exterior porcelain slabs is designed for people to comfortably walk on, including in all weathers. In addition, while interior porcelain tiles have a glossy texture, outdoor porcelain patio tiles have a slightly textured surface to improve practicality.
Can You Lay Outdoor Porcelain Tiles In The Rain?
It is not advisable to lay outdoor porcelain tiles or slabs in the rain. Vitrified porcelain paving slabs are non-absorbent, and a wet bed of mortar needs an absorbent base to adhere to. Check the weather forecast in advance to avoid rainy weather when wanting to lay outdoor tiles. If it does start to rain mid-project, cover the tiles with tarpaulin and resume once the ground is fully dry.
Do Porcelain Paving Slabs Crack Easily?
No! While the name ‘porcelain’ makes porcelain slabs seem like dainty delicate stones - the vitrification process which outdoor slabs undergo whereby the slabs are heated to high temperatures means they are far more durable than you may think. In addition, porcelain slabs would not be a top choice for garden landscapers if they didn’t offer the right qualities to be used in outdoor projects. However, like any paving material, improper installation—such as inadequate support or an improperly prepared base—can result in cracking. When properly installed, porcelain paving slabs are highly resilient and can endure heavy loads and harsh weather conditions without cracking.
