Preparation
- Mark out the area you intend to use with string or marker spray.
- Make sure the area is weed-free by pulling up weeds by hand.
- Build a base that's approx 15cm (6in) deep of coarse rubble or pea gravel.
- To prevent your base layer from mixing with the compost, lay down a polythene sheet with holes punched every 10cm, or use a permeable weed membrane.

- Choose larger stones to act as 'Keystones'. Position these first, and place the smaller rocks around them to create a natural look.
- Dig out hollows that you will set the stone into.
- Move the stones to their permanent positions, but ensure they still look natural.
- Set the rocks in place.
- Use weed-free topsoil underneath and between the rockery stones to keep them firmly in place.
- Bury the stones up to approx a third of their depth.
- Keep the areas between the stone fairly loose. Spread compost over these areas to create pockets for plants to thrive in.
