Frequently asked questions about rockery stones
What are rockery stones and how are they used in landscaping?
Rockery stones are a decorative aggregate used to create beautiful, organic features in outdoor spaces. You can create an attractive oasis by combining rockery stones such as Slate Rockery, limestone Cotswold Rockery, Green Granite, and the colour of hardy alpine plants.
They also give your garden depth, with rocks' different shapes, sizes, and colours creating interesting focal points.
Rockery stones are also perfect for water features as eye-catching borders to ponds or waterfalls.
How do I choose the right rockery stones for my garden or outdoor space?
With so many choices, picking the right rockery stones for your garden can feel overwhelming.
If your garden is an elegant, minimalist space, opt for stones in a consistent and stylish colour, such as slate. Our Plum Slate Rockery stone is a wonderful example of a chic and versatile slate that will make a bold statement whether you use it in a border, water feature or rockery.
For a more rustic style garden, carry on the organic, natural theme with irregularly shaped stones in a range of colours. The charcoal grey and orange of the Rustic Slate Rockery stones would add warmth to your outdoor space and offer unusual, angular shapes that you might encounter in the wild.
How to build a simple rockery
It might seem daunting if you've never built a rock garden. If your design is complex, consulting with a professional landscaper may be worth it. For more general questions, you can always Contact Us.
This simple step-by-step guide is ideal for creating a more manageable rockery.
Preparation
- Mark out the area you intend to use with string or marker spray.
- Make sure the area is weed-free by pulling up weeds by hand.
- Build a base that's approx 15cm (6in) deep of coarse rubble or pea gravel.
- To prevent your base layer from mixing with the compost, lay down a polythene sheet with holes punched every 10cm, or use a permeable weed membrane.
Placing your Rockery Stone
- Choose larger stones to act as 'Keystones'. Position these first, and place the smaller rocks around them to create a natural look.
- Dig out hollows that you will set the stone into.
- Move the stones to their permanent positions, but ensure they still look natural.
- Set the rocks in place.
- Use weed-free topsoil underneath and between the rockery stones to keep them firmly in place.
- Bury the stones up to approx a third of their depth.
- Keep the areas between the stone fairly loose. Spread compost over these areas to create pockets for plants to thrive in.
- Add plants to bring softness and colour to your rockery.
What are the benefits of using rockery stones in landscaping projects?
Introducing rockery stones can create beautiful features and showcase a range of colourful plants.
Another benefit is their durability. Rockery stones can look stunning all year round and are able to survive most weather conditions.
What are some popular design ideas using rockery stones?
Using fish-friendly rockery stones as borders for ponds creates an organic, seamless transition between your pond and the rest of the garden. When shopping for fish-friendly stones at Stone Warehouse, make sure you look for the ‘Fish Friendly’ badge in the product information.
If making a really bold statement is more your style, a garden monolith could be just the thing.
What maintenance is required for rockery stones?
Rockery stones are generally low maintenance and very durable. But, to ensure they stay pristine year-round, a little bit of TLC can go a long way.
- Remove any weeds you find. Make sure you pull them up from the root to get all of it. This will help your rockery to stay neat and tidy.
- Clean your rocks to get rid of dirt, leaves and weeds. Brush them with a broom or soak in a mild solution of white wine vinegar to get rid of stubborn stains.
